Abstract Taiwanese students subjecting in the US have to be adequate to communicate fluently and converse like students whose first verbiage were English in a daily basis especially in terms of classroom interaction . It is an accepted circumstance that foreign students have difficulty in communicating development English but the difficulty is much prevalent in students with Asian backgrounds . Very few studies have been done to measuring the communicating strategies that Taiwanese students use when they interact with their classmates and instructors during nameal and idle interaction . This take up attempts to fill in the gap surrounded by what is presently known of the phrase difficulties and the use of conversation strategies of Taiwanese students in America . This study specifically aims to determine the doer in which Taiwanese students enrolled in the graduate programs in University of Confederate California communicate ad-libly with English native speakers . This study measured the students use of communication strategies to enrich their verbal communication skills it also measured their perception of their unwritten proficiency and different ad hominem characteristics . Communication strategies were then cor colligate to personal characteristics and oral proficiency to determine which communication strategy was related to oral proficiency and whether personal characteristics of the participants had any relationship to use of communication strategies . A factor analysis of the communication strategies was conducted to determine what form of communication approach was by the students .

The variables were measured using a Likert-scale questionnaire specifically designed for this study oral proficiency was placed by a self-report scale wherein scores reflected the oral proficiency level of students . The results indicate that there are three study communication approaches that Taiwanese students use and prefer the approaches are dispassionate of different communication strategies which may be categorized as meaningful communication approach , word utilizing approach and playacting it safe approach , the results also indicate that communication strategies was related to oral proficiency but was not related to personal characteristics . The most communication strategy to enhance second gear language skills is interacting , communicating and speaking with native English speaking students .
