In addition, a book on interpersonal communication by Adler states; as far back as 1926, Paul Rankin (1952) institute that adults spent about 70% of their waking time communicating, paternity occupied 9% of that time, reading 16%, speaking 30% and listening 45%(Adler). So it can probably be concluded that listening is a very valuable horse sense/source of learning. The sad part is that while listening is employ so often, it is the least of the communicative skills taught on. Some research by Ralph Nichols on listening education in schools concluded this to be inverted curriculum(United States). This could explain why these early studies conducted by Ralph Nichols found that as the grade level advances from simple-minded to precedential high, the percent of students actually listening erodes(Nichols).

These trends suggest that most students and adults shinny through school, work and daily living with only a third grade level of listening(United States). It becomes clear (to anyone listening :) that listening is fundamental to living and unfortunately is neglected in the learning environments of American schools.
