The Bahamas Years (1764-1848; 1962-73)
Following the seizure of Turks Islands salt rakers by the french in 1764, diplomatic exchanges resulted in the prisoners being returned to the Turks Islands and full haunt made to them. Symmer wanted some free trade because, if foreign vessels traded flour, fish, oil, lumber and horses from the northern colonies, the islands would be settled at small expense. The Board of Trade liked Symmers ideas and invited him to capital of the United Kingdom where his plans were put to the king. In 1766 Symmer was appointed Kings Aggent, a title that had no counterpart anywhere else. The Turks Islands were officially set(p) under the jurisdiction of the Behamian government.
