The novel begins with Marietta sledding her small town in Kentucky. Marietta changes her name to Taylor and sets of for a new future in Oklahoma. It is very clear that Taylor wants a change in her life and when an old Indian lady approaches her begging her to take care of her baby its just the thing Taylor needs. Throughout Taylors journey to Oklahoma she really suffers to connect with this child.



Even though Taylor has just met this child they are already starting to get attached. The most amazing thing was the personal manner that child held on. From the first moment I picked it up out of its nest of wet blanket, it attached itself to me by its little manpower like roots sucking on dry dirt. (24).
